Richard Otevřel specialises in intellectual property and industrial property law, IT, personal data protection, general issues of EU law and public regulation. He leads a team providing comprehensive legal services in the area of personal data and privacy protection.
In the area of intellectual and industrial property rights, he focuses mainly on the protection of designs and trademarks and technology transfers in science and research, including their commercialization. In the field of IT, he focuses primarily on the commercial aspects of license agreements and implementation contracts and public regulation in electronic communication services.
In the field of EU law, he has advised clients on directly applicable legal regulations (subsidies from the EU), consumer protection, public procurement and concession agreements.
Before joining our law firm and after serving in the Czech Army as a legal adviser to the Battalion Commander, he worked for three years in different positions at the Czech Ministry of Justice, such as director of the International Department. Among other responsibilities, he performed various pre-accession tasks of the Ministry in connection with the approximation of Czech law and coordinated and took part in post-accession negotiations concerning EU laws, including participation in the European Commission’s expert organs, drafting the Czech Republic’s position paper in proceedings before the Court of Justice of the European Union and negotiating international agreements on cooperation in civil and criminal judiciary. He is a member of the Appellate Committee of the Czech Ministry of Culture.
In 2014 Richard was cited by the independent international publication Who’s Who Legal as one of leading international experts in the Czech Republic for information technology.
